Two of Brisbane’s top restaurants will close their doors after Christmas as their Brisbane institution closes doors owner reveals his health struggles that have led to the difficult decision.
Owner of Urbane and The Euro, Andy Buchanan, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
The progression of the degenerative neurological disease has meant that the everyday running of the two “very demanding” establishments has become too much for Mr Buchanan.
Urbane revealed the decision to close in a heavy-hearted post on social media on November 30, with Mr Buchanan saying that there would be “tears all around for the next month.”
“It is not something I have shared or drawn attention to,” he said.
“However, the physical symptoms of MS are now obvious and make running the restaurants tough.
“I would like to thank the incredible team I work with – both in the kitchen and on the floor – who have gone above and beyond to support me and give 150 percent every day.”
Andy and the team are looking forward to saying a proper goodbye to the wonderful and loyal diners the team have got to know over the last 18 years.
Although they considered selling the establishments, Mr Buchanan told The Courier Mail that it’s a difficult task which takes time, which he does not have.
“We did talk about selling but it takes time, and time is just something I don’t have, so we will go out on a high,” he said.
All vouchers can be used or refunded in December, and Urbane will now also be open on Wednesday nights to give people an additional opportunity to experience fine dining at its best while they can.
Urbane and The Euro will open for the last time on December 25 for Christmas lunch. The adjoining The Laneway Bar will also be closing.
