Bite me: bakers clean up at Newcastle Baking Show

At the Newcastle Baking Show, held at the Newcastle Racecourse in May, it was Bite Me Bakehouse saying “bite me” to the competition, cleaning up with six ribbons to take home.

The team from the Mt Colah-based bakery won first place in the Danish and Gateux categories, second place for their Mud Cake and Sausage Rolls, and a cool third in the Gluten-Free Cake and Fruit Tartlet sections—not a bad effort at all!

They weren’t the only bakery rewarded for their efforts, with first-time entrant Brown Sugar Bakery, from Forresters Beach on the Central Coast, collecting eight ribbons, including first and second place in the Flavoured Sourdough class and first place for their Grain 5 Strand Plait.

With a whopping 30 classes to enter, it’s safe to say judges had their work cut out for them. At the end of the day, overall winners were announced:

  • Bill Lewis Perpetual Trophy: Michael Brodie, Woolworths Swansea
  • Champion Loaf of the Show—Arthur Denison Trophy: Bonfire Bread
  • Champion Cake/Pastry of the Show—Bob Connell Trophy: The Bakehouse Café
  • Most Successful Bread Exhibitor: Dylan Bull, Bakers Delight Armidale
  • Most Successful Cake Exhibitor: The Bakehouse Café

Well done to all entrants and winners!
