November will see the battle lines drawn as the nation’s keenest bakers prepare to fight it out for the title of Australia’s greatest pie-maker.
You often hear them being described as humble pies, however, when it comes to the creation of these golden pastry-wrapped delights, it actually takes incredible skill and knowledge.
And, come November, the skill level of Australia’s best pie-makers will be put to the test when the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition is held once again.
Head judge Mike French said the amount of newcomers who entered the competition in 2019 had been simply overwhelming.
“These entrants brought with them myriad new and innovative pie fillings and flavours,” he said.
“One new entrant said he felt like a movie star with the amount of media coverage he received as well as the massive influx of customers coming to his bakery to purchase his award-winning pies.”
Last year’s competition saw WA’s Pinjarra Bakery take home the Overall Winner Plain Pie trophy, while Old Fernvale Bakery in Queensland won the Overall Winner Gourmet Pie with its creamy seafood pie. However, it’s important to note the competition doesn’t stop at pies. Victoria-based Tatura Hot Bread won the Overall Winner Plain Sausage Roll while Molly Dene Bakehouse’s lasagne roll claimed the Overall Winner Gourmet Sausage Roll.
The competition has been delayed due to COVID-19, with the original September date being pushed back to November, nevertheless excitement is still running high.
Entries will now open on September 1 and close on September 30, with the competition itself being held from November 11 to 13 at Southern Cross Supplies in Lidcombe, NSW. The delay could prove to be a boon with a new Christmas mince pie category also being added to the 2020 program.
The competition is made possible by sponsors EOI Bakery, Heinz, Simple Simon Pie Machines, Complete Display Equipment, National Baking Industry Association, Robot Coupe, UNOX AUS, Ezy Bake and Earthens.
