Australia Imports Wheat for the First Time in 12 Years

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has issued a permit for a bulk import of wheat from Canada to be brought into Australia. With the drought causing grain production to fall 20 per cent last year, this shipment sees Australia importing wheat for the first time in 12 years.

With grain growers concerned the Canadian import will bring in a new weed or disease into Australia further affecting grain production, the government ensures it’s low risk.

A statement from the department said, “The import conditions require that the grain is sourced from areas assessed as presenting a low plant and animal biosecurity risk and impose strict movement, storage and processing controls within Australia”.
