Aussie Staple in Good Hands

The country’s best pie makers were named on the final day of Fine Food Australia as part of the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.

Hundreds of pies were judged across four days of stiff competition, with the inaugural gourmet sausage roll award adding another dimension to an already diverse selection of sweet and savoury goods.

The top gong in the prestigious plain mince pie category went to Four Seasons Patisserie in Byford, Western Australia, continuing the state’s long-running success at the national competition.

National manager of the long-running competition, Danielle Wooldridge, said this year marked the biggest Sydney entry pool to date, with an influx of pies recieved in the last week.

“People are really thinking outside the box. Every year it seems to get better – you don’t think it can, but then the pies go out on the table and you see bakers have modified their recipes and put forward something really remarkable,” she said.

“Damien (Mountain High Pies) was a real standout, but it was really close in the other categories, with the judges doing a lot of double checking.”
