Anzac biscuits have made the top 50 list for the best cookies worldwide

The Anzac biscuit has been named on the list of the top 50 biscuits in the world.

The Australian classic came in at number 36 on the list, which was compiled by TasteAtlas who collated data from more than 10,000 user rating on their site. To create the list the top 50 biscuits were ranked by those with the highest average five-star scores.

Anzac biscuits scored an average of 3.9 stars out of five, putting them on par with French florentines, Italian amaretti, and US snickerdoodles.

According to Time Out, the food experts ranked the nation’s best Anzac biscuits as those served during morning tea on The Riverboat Postman cruise along the Hawkesbury River in Brooklyn, NSW. These were followed by those baked at Flour and Stone and Berkelo Bakery in Sydney.

Coming in at number 1one on the TasteAtlas list was the alfajore – an Argentinian shortbread cookie sandwiched with dulce de leche. However, it was San Telmo – an Argentinian restaurant in Melbourne that was named as the fourth top-rated spot to get your hands on an alfajore.

Anzac biscuits rose to popularity in WWI when they were sent to Anzac soldiers in food care packages. The eggless recipe, which is based on oats and golden syrup, kept well during the long sea voyages. However, it was also markedly different to the Anzac biscuits we know and love today. According to the Australian War Memorial the first Anzac biscuits were a nutritional supplement for bread and incredible hard. In fact, they were so hard and durable that some soldiers even wrote messages on them before sending them the long distances to loved ones. They were also used as paint canvases, and even photo frames.

The Anzac biscuits as we know them today began to appear in cookbooks from the 1920s onwards, but how they came to be identified with WWI or the Anzacs is still unknown.
