Sweet Lu, the incredibly popular traditional Chinese patisserie, recently announced the opening of its second location in Sydney’s Newtown. The opening was met by queues around the block, with loyal fans and customers keen to sample the delicious treats that Sweet Lu has a reputation for providing.
Co-owner Steve Hou told Broadsheet, “It was stressful, but we were also really happy. We’d been planning the opening for 18 months.”
Sweet Lu is named after the other co-owner of the business and pastry chef Lucy Lu. The business originated with Lucy, who began selling traditional Chinese desserts with a modern twist on them out of her home kitchen in 2017. From there, as the business’s following grew, Lucy and Steve were able to open up the couple’s first, flagship, store in the heart of Sydney’s Chinatown.
The new location in Newtown stocks the same sweet and savoury treats as the first store, as well as some exclusive specials that are only sold there, like the bakery’s fragrant and crisp croissant range, its wide and varying range of interesting gelato flavours, and Sweet Lu’s exclusive blend of coffee—brewed on a manual machine that is singular to Sweet Lu.
The décor in the new space remains the same as that in the flagship store, with the clean, bright decor that customers are use to, along with the classic pink, gold, and white colour scheme.
Steve said that the interior is inspired by Lucy’s personality.
He told Broadsheet, “She is very warm, very kind. We want our customers to feel that warmth when they arrive and bring them a small happiness.”
The space is full of bright, open colours—whites, pinks, and golds—with large-scale roses all over the ceilings and full-moon-shaped tables.
A third Sweet Lu location in Chatswood is currently in the works, with Lucy and Steve working on opening up in Chatswood Westfield.
