A Chocolate a Day…

With consumers feeling ever more responsible for their food consumption choices, a chocolate products inspired by the better-for-you movement are gaining momentum, according to data and analytics company GlobalData.

Healthy chocolate alternatives enhanced with nutritional benefits are grabbing customer attention. According to GlobalData’s 2017 Q1 global consumer survey, the demand for healthier alternatives is evident, with over two thirds (69%) of consumers globally finding food and drink products that have been fortified with added nutrients to be somewhat or very appealing.

Iliyana Mesheva, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, said, “Brands are attempting to make their confectionery products more functional by enriching them with extra fibre, protein, vitamins, and also higher cocoa content, known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.”

As well as capitalising on the demand for healthy, fortified chocolate products, chocolatiers are also tapping into the superfoods craze, with combinations such as ginger, acai, and turmeric-based chocolate.

Iliyana said, “Overall, the rise in ‘healthy indulgence’ chocolate products have allowed consumers to feel good about the products they consume without compromising on the sensory-satisfaction appeal.”
