Wholly Crumpets opens its doors in Bulimba

If you’re after a bit of childhood nostalgia, look no further than Bulimba’s newest gem. Wholly Crumpets has opened its doors in Bulimba’s burgeoning foodie locale, Oxford Street, and is dressing up our favourite golden comfort food with an assortment of new toppings.

While Wholly Crumpet’s new café venture is a fresh addition to the market, you may have actually had one of their fluffy golden crumpets without realising! Wholly crumpets, originally a market vendor, can be spied on menus around Brisbane.

Before opening their Bulimba store, brothers and Wholly founders Billy and Miller Rouse had been running as a wholesale business, supplying cafes around Brisbane with their delicious goods. The pair still operate a commercial kitchen in Ashgrove, pumping out crumpets in the early morning, ready to be served around Brisbane by sunrise.

With the conversion of many cafes to café-grocers, Wholly Crumpets saw their wholesale opportunities expanding. Their crumpets can be spied at a host of Brisbane’s favourite cafes, including West End’s Morning After, Hawthorne’s Sister and Peach Café in Auchenflower.

Wholly’s new digs features a 20-seater alfresco area with shaded timber picnic tables gathered around a central kitchen. Despite its modest size, Wholly Crumpet’s menu packs a punch, letting the humble crumpet puts its best foot forward. Whether you feel like dressing it up or dressing it down, Wholly has options for everyone, serving their little golden discs in both sweet and savoury styles.

For the sweet tooths, there’s a lathering of Nutella, strawberries and toasted coconut, or even just a delightfully simple drizzling of hive and harvest honey. For those looking for something savoury, you can order with smoked salmon, dill, cream cheese and capers or avocado, feta, lemon and hemp seed.

If you’re feeling hungry, Wholly’s signature ‘Crumpys’ are for you – a crumpet sandwich stuffed with delicious fillings, from bacon, egg to cheesy mushrooms. Wholly also serves soup (with a side of crumpet soldiers, of course), and yoghurt and granola, among other delights. If you fall in love with Wholly’s delicious baked goods, you can purchase a six pack of crumpets to take home with you.
