Victorian Family Bakery Chain On A Roll

Victorian Family Bakery Chain On A Roll

It’s official: Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses make the state’s best sausage rolls.

The family-owned and -operated business that dates back to the 1800s was awarded Victoria’s Best Sausage Roll at the Baking Association of Victoria’s 2015 Baking Show.

Created with hormone-free, lean beef sausage mince and wrapped in 60 individual layers of puff pastry, head of baking Michael Plarre said the bakery’s traditional sausage roll recipe had not changed in three decades.

“We firmly believe if it’s not broke, don’t break it! Our sausage rolls were perfect then and are still perfect now and this award is testament to that,” he said.

“Every product we make is tested first at our own dining room tables and if they don’t pass our dining room test they simply don’t hit the market. We wouldn’t dream of sharing anything with Victorian families that we wouldn’t share with our own.”

The same event, which attracted more than 100 entries from some of the country’s best bakers, also saw Ferguson Plarre win the hotly contested best decorated themed novelty cake.

Head cake decorator Maria Cerra spent 45 hours creating her culinary masterpiece, which interpreted this year’s ‘Fruit Belt Region’ theme.

“I spent a lot of time hand-crafting the variety of fruits represented on the cake, I wanted them each be unique and so life-like they could easily be mistaken for the real thing. Judging by the response I have gotten I feel I got pretty close to achieving this,” Maria said.

The latest awards add to the swag of awards already collected by the Plarre family, which now has 65 Bakehouses across Victoria.
