Tony Yamera from Bakery by Textbook stands in front of a graffitied NYC subway sign. He has blond hair, and wears glasses. He has on a white t-shirt with a purple apron over the top.

A Brooklyn-based bakery is making a name for itself after announcing it would be operating on a ‘name your price’ or pay what you can bread policy for its customers.

Bakery by Textbook master baker Tony Yamera made the announcement recently, and the transaction was simple: customers could choose a loaf of bread as well as a price. which could be as much as $9 or “nothing at all”, according to Tony.

“We didn’t do this to make any  money,” Tony said to US talk show Varney & Co.

“It’s nice to feel that we’re actually doing something for people, and people are using it.”

Tony said that despite having the option to pay nothing at all, many customers chose to pay between $2 and $9 for the bread, as the production of one loaf usually costs around $3 or $4.  T

“The hope is that someone who really needs it can walk away paying nothing,” Tony said, adding no other discounted items were on offer at the bakery.

“Everyone should be able to afford bread that’s good for them. We really wanted to do something that was [just] for the community.

“We’re still a business and we have other things to sell. And those are the things that make us profitable. But yeah, we didn’t do this to make any money.”
