The Guinness World Record attempt involved 100 bakers making 2581 loaves of pan de fiesta

Mexican bakers in the small central state of Tlaxcala have broken a Guinness World Record for the largest pan de fiesta (party bread).

The team consisted of 100 bakers from the San Juan Huactzinco and San Juan Totolac regions, who successfully assembled 2581 pieces of the bread to form the state’s name in a public plaza on October 13. The record attempt formed part of the state capital’s 500th anniversary celebrations.

According to state officials a Guinness adjudicator confirmed the record at an event marking the 500th anniversary of the state capital, also called Tlaxcala but officially known as Tlaxcala de Xicohtencatl.

The most recent Guinness World Record marks the third for the region, which in the past has also set the record for the world’s longest tapete (a colourful, sawdust carpet that is laid out in a public area for processions and festivals) as well as the largest variety of  tacos de canasta, which are tacos stored in covered basket to keep them warm until sold.

Governor Lorena Cuellar Cisneros said everyone was very happy with the success.

“We are very happy because we achieved it. It was a challenge that required teamwork, coordinating efforts, and staying united,” she said.

“That was precisely what allowed us to achieve this recognition, which belongs to all the people to Tlaxcala. Without Tlaxcala, there is no Mexico!”

Tlaxcala Mayor Benjamin Atonal Conde called this most recent Guinness World Record attempt a true brotherhood between the two municipalities.

Guinness official Alfredo Aristo added that the project had taken the team of bakers six months of preparation and ensured they also met strict hygiene, safety and quality rules. He also noted the festive bread was made using traditional artisanal methods.

“The minimum requirement of 1000 pieces for official certification was far exceeded,” he said.

“You are officially amazing.”

Pan de fiesta is traditionally a sweet walnut-flavoured bread that is brushed with egg wash and decorated with sesame seeds, although local bakers do offer other varieties including pine nut and egg cream.
