Madeleine De Proust on Lygon street in Melbourne has been named on the Australian Interior Design Awards Shortlist. The bricks-and-mortar store opened in late 2023 serving delicious and artistic Madeleine’s which bring a twist to the traditional French pastry.

The store was designed by IF Architecture who are known for their hospitality designs including Attica restaurant, Atta restaurant, Cutler & Co and many more. Rong Yao Soh, Co-Founder of Madeleine De Proust said the interior design of the store is reminiscent of childhood.

“The inspiration behind the design of Madeleine de Proust draws from the cherished memories of childhood and the nostalgia associated with classic milk bars, corner shops, and tuck shops,” he said.

“These places were once vibrant hubs of excitement, where colourful sweets and treats beckoned from behind glass displays. Our aim was to capture the essence of these nostalgic moments while reimagining them into a modern interpretation.”

A unique and specific interior design plan is as vital to spaces like bakeries and other retail for personality, practicality and also customer experience. Rong went on to say that Madeleine De Proust’s design contributed to these experiences for customers and tied them all together.

“Interior design plays a crucial role in a bakery, setting the tone and atmosphere for the entire customer experience,” Rong said.

“Just as our brand elevates the traditional French Madeleine into a luxurious indulgence, our vision for interior design revitalises the customer experience.

“By combining classic design elements with modern sophistication and offering a diverse range of flavours and decorations, we aim to contemporise the Madeleine with finesse, ensuring that every visit to Madeleine de Proust is a memorable and immersive experience.”
