This is not Nana’s trifle: Gelato Messina’s Christmas Coma is back

Trifles are back in vogue in a big way, and they’re no like you remember them.

Gelato Messina’s limited edition Christmas Coma trifle is back for 2019, this year channelling a “good ‘ol Aussie Christmas in the sunshine”.

Serving 20-30 hungry guests, the annual Christmas Coma is an enormous gelato trifle released during the festive season, and comes with one litre of Messina’s own rum custard, a Messina branded glass trifle bowl and a cooler bag to get it home safely, making the hefty $170 price tag worth it (let’s face it, one dish we don’t have to prepare ourselves on the big day is priceless!).

The decadent concoction boats nine layers of passionfruit mousse, guava flummery (whipped jelly), macadamia crunch, coconut chiboust (lightly whipped coconut cream), mango-soaked sponge and mango sorbet, finished with a pineapple, passionfruit and mango mosaic made with real fruit, and topped with a handmade chocolate coconut.

The Christmas Coma trifle comes with one litre of Messina’s own rum custard, and a Messina branded glass trifle bowl and cooler bag to help you to cart it home (your trifle can travel two hours zipped up in the cooler bag, ready to put in the freezer when you get home). It also comes with a box of five Messina Christmas crackers containing prizes such as free Messina scoops and one golden ticket that’ll grant you a year’s supply of gelato.

Trifles can be ordered from the Messina website and pick up will be available from most Messina stores (except for The Star, Surry Hills, Richmond and Coolangatta) from 12pm on December 20 until 6pm on Christmas Eve. If you’re a Messina app user, each trifle purchase will earn you 1700 points.

Messina just has one warning: make sure the trifle bowl will fit in your freezer!
