Fairy bread is considered something of a classic Australian culinary treat.
And, Dollar Sweets is calling on bakeries around the nation to serve up the firm favourite on Fairy Bread Day to help raise funds for The Pyjama Foundation.
The first Fairy Bread Day was held one decade ago – on November 24, 2014, when founder Adam Schell decided over a piece of fairy bread that the classic treat deserved a day of its own. In 2020 Adam brought the idea to Dollar Sweets, who have since organised and celebrated Fairy Bread Day each November 24.
Dollar Sweet managing director Miranda Higgins said they were excited to be involved in turning the day of celebration into something more than nostalgia.
“Fair bread has always been a symbol of joy and simplicity, and there’s nothing more quintessentially Australian than a slice of fairy bread,” she said.
“This year we’re once again partnering with The Pyjama Foundation, an organization that provides one-on-one mentoring for children in foster care across Australia. This partnership adds a deeper sense of purpose to our celebration, making it even more meaningful.”
Ms Higgins said throughout November Dollar Sweets would be donating 10 cents from each sale of their 100s and 1000s to support The Pyjama Foundation, and they encouraged local bakeries to join them.
“Create fairy bread-inspired treats and help spread the word within the community,” she said.
“Alternatively bakeries can make a direct pledge through the Fairy Bread Day website. Together we can make a real difference in the lives of foster children.”
Ms Higgins said the 2023 initiative raised $34,917.20 for The Pyjama Foundation, which allowed them to add 23 new mentors to their ‘Love of Learning’ program.
“This year we’re aiming to do even better and hope to introduce even more Pyjama Angels who can make a positive impact in these children’s lives,” she said.
The Pyjama Foundation chief executive officer Bronwyn Sheehan said two vulnerable children in Australia enter the foster system every hour.
“Fundraisers like Fairy Bread Day shine a much-needed spotlight on these children and provide crucial support,” she said.
“We deeply appreciate any effort that brings awareness to their needs, and Fairy Bread Day aligns perfectly with our mission. What could be sweeter than making a slice of fairy bread while supporting a worthy cause?”
