Australia’s love for the meat pie is world-renowned, but Bucks Country Bakehouse has taken the next step of installing a frozen pie vending machine that’s accessible 24/7.
The bakery, located in regional Victoria, installed the frozen pie vending machine in late June, and have filled it with two-packs of their housemade pies.
Speaking with the Today Show Bucks Country Bakehouse co-owners Will and Lauran Wright said the idea came about when customers expressed they wanted to be able to buy pies outside of the bakery’s opening times.
“At Bucks we’re only open four days a week. We’re a small family business, and our customers wanted to get our pies all the time. So we kind of had to think outside the box,” Will said.
“When I was living in Chicago five years ago, down the street from my apartment was a vending machine that I could buy cupcakes from. I thought, ‘why not get pies from a vending machine?’
“[So] we thought outside the box and brought that vision to life.”
Will said one of the difficulties they faced was keeping pies at the right temperature. However, this was solved by stocking the vending machine with frozen pies that people could then take home to heat up.
“We have chunky steak; chunky steak and mushroom; chunky pepper steak; butter chicken; Mum’s famous chicken and leek pie; Dad’s famous lamb, rosemary and port wine pie in the machine,” Lauren said, adding they had their first sale at 4.30am on June 25.
“The feedback we’re getting is people want Bucks vending machines all over Australia.”
