Bakers Delight has declared March 13 as National Hot Cross Bun day

With just over a month to go until Easter, Bakers Delight has declared March 13 as National Hot Cross Bun day.

On the day the bakery chain will be giving away 150,000 limited edition raspberry and white chocolate hot cross buns.

The nation-wide celebration was announced in conjunction with research that revealed how Australians prefer to eat their hot cross buns: toasted or not? With or without butter? And with peel or no peel?

According to Bakers Delight research the majority of people preferred their hot cross buns fresh over toasted (44 per cent), while 20 per cent of people opted for no butter. It also became clear that although we love a novelty product, most of us still prefer the traditional hot cross bun with 71 per cent of respondents saying they favoured the classic fruit-filled variety.

Bakers Delight Head Baker Luke Farrell said preparations were well underway ahead of hot cross bun season.

“We’ve been making hot cross buns for more than 40 years… and we’re thrilled to declare March 13 as National Hot Cross Bun Day,” he said.

“From January through to April we’ll produce around 18 million hot cross buns, and bake over 4.2 million buns during Easter week alone. If you put each hot cross bun that Bakers Delight bakes in 2025 from end to end, it would go from Sydney to LA!”

    14 March

Whilst I love hot cross buns, and I do eat them before Easter, traditionally hot cross buns were originally made to celebrate the end of lent, with the cross depicting the crucifixion of Jesus.
It is in poor taste that Bakers Delight has claimed 13 March as a National hot cross bun day! It’s an advertising stunt to promote new flavours, etc. You can’t take it away from Easter, regardless of our now multi or non religious society.
