For the first time in years the 2024 Baking Industry Trade Show saw the ANZBake competition take place.

The ANZBake competition pitted three Australian bakers against three bakers from New Zealand, and saw both teams create a range of much-loved baked products from lamingtons to pavlova and a gourmet lamb pie.

The Australian team of Tracy Nickl [Gumnut Patisserie], Jeremy Mavromatakis [Boulangerie Vietnam], and Brad Burkitt [Terang Country Bakery] claimed the 2024 trophy by a very small margin over the New Zealand team: Jason Hay, Julia Kaur-Randhawa, and Patrick Welzenbach.

Each of the team members were hand-picked by the Baking Association of Australia (BAA) and Baking New Zealand.

Prior to the event Brad Burkitt, who made 48 lamb pies at the competition, said he went through a range of emotions after getting the phone call from BAA executive officer Tony Smith asking if he would take part.

“I was a bit shocked, then excited,  and then nervous,” he told WD News.

“I’m more nervous going into this competition than I have others, because it’s not just my pies – it’s representing our country.”
