In a comprehensive taste test conducted by consumer advocacy group CHOICE, Tony’s Chocolonely Milk Chocolate has been declared the best milk chocolate block available in Australian supermarkets, scoring an impressive 86 per cent.
The popular Belgium-made brand topped a lineup of 19 contenders, including major players like Cadbury, Lindt, Aldi, Whittaker’s and newer names such as Feastables.
CHOICE’s expert panel assessed the chocolate blocks on four criteria: taste, aroma, texture, and appearance. Only chocolates scoring 80 per cent or higher received the coveted CHOICE Expert Rating.
Tony’s Chocolonely stood out not only for its flavour but also for its distinctive, irregular block design.
“Overall, a very pleasant texture and flavour—a nice chocolate that I could keep eating,” said one panellist.
Another praised it as “pleasant to eat,” citing a “good blend of cocoa and milk,” while a third simply called it “very smashable.”
Tied for second place with a score of 84 per cent were Whittaker’s Creamy Milk and Feastables Milk Chocolate, the latter created by YouTuber MrBeast. Though Feastables is a relative newcomer, experts were impressed.
One reviewer noted it had a “pleasant nutty caramel flavour,” and called it “a very pleasant eating chocolate. It melts quickly in the mouth, not very creamy but toasted overtones.”
Another described it as having a “very smooth” texture and “beautiful fresh milk cocoa profile.”
Lindt’s No Sugar Added Milk Chocolate surprised many by taking the fourth spot with a solid 83 per cent rating, proving that low sugar doesn’t have to mean low quality.
One expert noted it had a “good texture/snap, melts quickly in the mouth, mild creaminess,” and described it as “a pleasant chocolate.”
Another found it “creamy (but not dairy creamy)” but commented on a “fake aroma” and unusual aftertaste.
Woolworths Belgian Milk Chocolate came in fifth with 81 per cent, despite its affordable price of just $2 per 100g. Described as having a “mild cocoa aroma and flavour” and a “pleasant sweetness that does not override or dominate,” it earned praise for delivering quality at a low cost.
CHOICE’s taste test reinforces that when it comes to milk chocolate, price doesn’t always determine quality, and consumers have a wide variety of excellent options to suit their taste and budget.
