Abbots and Kinney forced to close doors on Croydon store

Popular Adelaide bakery Abbots and Kinney is the latest bakery to announce a store closure.

The bakery and café, which has stores across the city, made the announcement on social media with managing director Richard Wilson attributing the decision to the combination of the lease expiring and prices increasing.

“You have been so king to us over the past years, but unfortunately our time here has come to an end,” he wrote.

“Unfortunately our time here has come to an end. Leases expiring, prices increasing… it’s something we’re hearing more and more often these days with lots of businesses being forced to make tough decisions.”

The Croydon store, which was housed in the former Red Door Bakery site, opened its doors in 2019.

However, it’s not all bad news with Abbots and Kinney set to open a new store in Adelaide’s north-east. The exact location hasn’t yet been announced, but it will be the seventh location for the brand. It’s other stores are trading on Pirie St, King William St,  Malvern, West Lakes and North Tce as well as at the university campuses of Adelaide University and University of South Australia.

The sixth store for the brand at King William Street store, located in Adelaide’s CBD, opened its doors to great excitement last year.

Richard described the decision to set up shop in a $220 million office tower as a “no brainer”.

“It’s an amazing location with a beautiful heritage-listed entrance. We’ve really tried to tie in with it,” he said to Glam Adelaide.

“We’ve got some great coffee, a huge range of sweet treats and an expanded selection of savoury offerings that we’re really excited about.”
