Zumbo Protégée Brazil-Bound

Rising pastry star Adele Di Bella has been selected to represent the Australian Skillaroos, competing at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in São Paulo, Brazil, this August.

The Patisserie and Confectionery category hopeful will be joined by fellow Australian, Samantha Johnson (Restaurant Service), after earning a spot on the national team through a rigorous selection process that included gold medal-winning performances at the 2014 WorldSkills Australia National Competition held in Perth, and the 2015 Oceania WorldSkills Competition held in New Zealand.

Employed by Adriano Zumbo and with a Certificate III in Retail Baking, Adele said competing is a lot of hard work, but making a mark in the pastry industry is worth the effort.

“When I was training for a different competition, Adriano Zumbo was my mentor and coach. He helps out a lot and makes me want to reach that end result. I learnt a lot from him then, and still do,” she said.

“My advice to anyone who wants to compete is, honestly, give it a go! You work hard for your results and if you work hard enough it will show. Having support from your friends and family, work and TAFE is also another thing you must have because that’s the best feeling knowing people are behind you 100 per cent.”

The event will attract more than 1000 of the world’s most talented skill and trade technicians under the age of 25 from around 60 countries and across 50 categories.

In the next few months, the Australian hopefuls will work closely with dedicated teachers, mentors and employers to develop and refine their skills, all in the hope of being crowned the best in the world in their respective industry.

“To be chosen to represent your country in any discipline is a tremendous achievement, and those who have been named a 2015 Skillaroo should be incredibly proud,” WorldSkills Australia chief executive officer Mark Callaghan said.

“While they have endured many hours of training and preparation to get to this stage, it is only the tip of the iceberg as they now hone their skills to take on the best of the world.”
