SafeWork SA delays flour dust exposure regulations

SafeWork SA has announced it will postpone the incoming workplace exposure limits for flour and grain dust for up to 18 months

The South Australian State Government has announced it will extend the deadline for the incoming Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) regulations for grain and flour dust.

The decision was made following extensive consultation with producers in the state.

According to SafeWork SA the grain industry represented by Grain Producers SA and Grain Producers Australia, and the Australian Industry Group (AIG) have raised concerns about being able to demonstrate compliance with the revised WELs and implement the necessary workplace controls before December 1, 2026 – when the new WELS were due to commence.

There will be an extension of at least 18 months before the commencement of the new WELs come into effect, with the new limits now expected to be enforced no earlier than July 2028. This will ensure there is no disruption to the coming two grain harvest seasons and will provide time for detailed discussion and consultation between industries, SafeWork SA, and other authorities about the impact of proposed WELs.

Similar moves have also been made in Victoria where delays to the new WELs for grain and flour dust have been proposed.

SafeWork SA will continue to work in collaboration with the grain industry and AIG to deliver specific guidance, education and support on other WELs including grain dust.
