Once again the price of a meat pie is making waves, after F1 fans found on being sold for USD$24 (AUD$37) at a US event.
Scott Mclaughlin, who is an IndyCar driver from New Zealand, took to social media platform X recently to respond to an attendee a the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
According to news.com.au the original poster had shared a photo of the food option available at the event, which included international items from the UK, China and Australia. The Australians in the comments were up in arms, calling the act “un-Australian”.
“Fark Moi, that won’t pass the pub test,” one commenter wrote, while another added it was was criminal.
A photo of the pie in question even made it to the Australian Meat Pie Society Facebook group, and showed the pie contained ground beef and mushrooms and was served with salad.
It’s not the first time the price of a pie has made headlines. Back in 2022 LoDE Pies in Sydney grabbed attention for their $20 pithvier that was stuffed with wagyu brisket and shitake mushrooms, however, it’s a far cry from a pie from the Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire, UK, which received a Guinness World Record in 2005 for the world’s most expensive pie.
Coming in at a hefty £8195 – £1024 per slice – the pie’s ingredients included £500 of wagyu beef fillet, Chinese matsutake mushrooms that come in at £500 per kilo, winter black truffles, French bluefoot mushrooms (£200 per kilo) and gravy made from two bottles of vintage 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine at £1000 per bottle. Finally, the pastry was topped with edible gold leaves.
