Australia’s oldest family-owned chocolate maker, Haigh’s Chocolates, is entering a new chapter, with long-standing Chief Executive Officer Alister Haigh announcing his retirement after 30 years at the helm.

The leadership baton will officially pass on August 4 to Chief Operating Officer Peter Millard, who becomes the first non-family member to lead the company in its 110-year history.

Haigh’s remains a proudly family-owned business, with Alister continuing his involvement as a board member alongside fourth-generation family members Simon Haigh and Sara Fitzgerald.

In addition to his board duties, he will take on a new role as brand ambassador, helping to preserve the company’s storied heritage.

This milestone leadership transition coincides with a transformative period for the South Australian chocolate icon. The company is preparing to open its $130 million state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Salisbury South later this year and expand its retail footprint with the launch of a new store in Sydney’s Broadway in September.

Alister, who began working at Haigh’s in 1973 and became CEO in 1995, has seen the company grow exponentially.

“Reflecting on my time, it’s incredible to think how far we have come over the years with more than 300 chocolate varieties, 900 employees, 21 stores and grown tenfold all while remaining true to the heritage and quality Haigh’s is known for,” Alister said.

Chair of the Haigh’s Chocolates Board, Carolyn Mitchell, expressed confidence in Peter Millard’s appointment.

“An external panel was engaged to interview Peter and ensure that he was the right person for the role and the right custodian of the Haigh’s brand. After presenting his vision for the business it was undeniable that Peter has the passion, determination, and understanding for this role,” Carolyn said.

Peter joined Haigh’s in 2006 as a Supply Chain Manager and has served as COO for the past four years.

“Having had the privilege to work closely with Alister for nearly two decades, I have been inspired by his ambitious, humble and personable leadership,” Peter said.

“Alongside the family I remain passionate about preserving the enduring quality of Haigh’s premium chocolate to delight generations of chocolate lovers for years to come.”

Now turning 70, Alister expressed confidence in his successor’s leadership.

“Peter has been integral to our success here at Haigh’s… His work ethos is a testament to the Haigh’s values of contribution, determination and trust,” Alister said.

“I feel confident knowing that the business will continue to thrive and grow under his exceptional leadership.”
