Delizioso: straight from Italy, literally

Parramatta’s newest bakery, Delizioso is bringing Italian goods to the city – quite literally.

The family-run bakery, located in Smithfield was, initially destined for the Sicilian town of Palermo.

According to Broadsheet, the bakery bags at Delizioso sport “Via Dei Quartieri 21/A, Palermo 90146” – the original intended address for the business.

The  brains behind Delizioso, the Guaiana family, moved to Palermo in 2021 after decades of running bakeries in Sydney. The idea behind the move was to open a shop in the family’s hometown. They had everything ready to go from the fit-out to the baking equipment that had been sourced from smaller Sicilian towns. However, when plans changed the family decided to move back to Australia and literally brought their bakery with them.

“All of this is from Italy,” Martina Guaiana told Broadsheet.

“So it’s all an Italian set-up. If you see that [pointing to the coffee corner] that’s the bar. That’s where you drink coffee, you know, like an Italian. Quick espresso or something.”

Everything inside Delizioso, from the countertops to the toasters, tables and chairs, ovens, baking equipment fridges, was squeezed into just three shipping containers and then transported from Palermo down under. It was then all moved into their new premises, 8km south-west of Parramatta with the help of a forklift.

Delizioso opened its doors earlier this year, and is now known for its shelves, which have been filled with quaresimali biscotti and ciabatta, while the display cases are home to a sweet and savoury patisserie offering – cannoli, profiteroles, and filled doughnuts.

Martina said another large point of focus was the price point for the range, which has been created from nonna and nonno-approved recipes.

“We tried our best [to keep prices low] because we know it’s hard in this day and age,” she said.

“We’ve got a lot of elderly people. We’ve got single mums coming in. We just want to make it affordable.”
