Back in 2013 when Cobb Lane first opened its doors in Yarraville, it was met with huge enthusiasm. So it comes as no surprise that Melburnians have welcomed the news the bakery is about to open its fourth location in the Melbourne CBD.

Headed up by husband-and-wife team Matt Forbes and Amy Newman, the newest location in Bennetts Lane promises to build on this reputation while also catering to the largely corporate clientele.

Speaking with Broadsheet, Matt said before they settled on the bakery range he and Amy spent a lot of time sitting in Wesley Place, just watching people and getting an overall feel for the area.

“It’s an awesome spot. There’s so many cool cafes and restaurants and bars,” he said.

“And, as we discovered more about Bennetts Lane itself and the history, it was really exciting to us to be able to bake again on that site,” Amy added. This is a reference to baker and cook John Brenssell, who is said to have operated in the lane from as early as 1860.

The announcement was made on the bakery’s Instagram page in early February.

“A new chapter is coming to Melbourne CBD,” it read.

“We’ve been quietly working on this for a while now and we’re so excited to finally share that we will be opening a store in the new Bennetts Lane in late March.

“Thank you for all your support, we truly couldn’t do this with you and we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors.”
