Bulk up with bread
Results are in and now it’s official: you don’t need a sports bar to get your daily dose of protein; you can get a decent protein hit from your humble loaf of bread.
Australians are a bit obsessed with protein and it’s easy to see why. Protein is responsible for repairing our muscles but maybe more important, it’s what makes us feel full. Not having enough protein can also run down your immune system.
As a rough guide, you need one gram of protein for every kilo you weigh, so if you weigh 70 kilograms, you should eat 70 grams of protein every day.
New data from Grains and Legumes Nutrition Council found one in five wholemeal/wholegrain breads to be a “good source” of protein. A “good source” constitutes a product containing at least 10 grams of protein per serve, which is the same amount found in a glass of milk or two boiled eggs. That means a couple of pieces of bulk of bread with a couple of eggs will put you well on your way to your daily dose of protein.
Even white bread came out on top with almost three quarters of sliced loaves classified as a “source” of protein, with at least 5 grams per serve.
Sports Dietitian Chloe McLeod told The Huffington Post, “In countries like Australia, we’ve got lots of different, wonderful foods around us, and it’s actually incredibly easy to eat enough protein each day.”
And it seems wholegrain bread is a great place to start.
