Aussie bakers taking on the world
An Aussie-themed bakers opened in Tampa Bay, a harbour on the west central coast of Florida in the USA, recently. Opened by Australian expat Regina McColl and her American husband, Walkabout Bakery & Café, makes lamingtons, hedgehog slices, pies and “sangas” for an American clientele.
Regina told the Tampa Bay Times that she’s educating locals on the Aussie tradition of Friday footy pies, which she likens to America’s ‘taco Tuesdays’.
Also on the menu are melting moments, caramel slice, and cherry ripe slice.
Regina follows in the footsteps of Ashley McGlynn who followed his spouse to the Czech Republic in Prague in 2010. Two years later he opened his own pie store, The Pie Shop. Now, four years down the track, Ashley has 14 outlets selling his pies in Prague.
“We’ve written a letter, an application to authorities, for the word pie to be put in to the Czech vocabulary because the word doesn’t exist here,” Ashley told The Daily Telegraph. “They call them kalar, which means wheel.”
