Yum by name, yum by nature

Yum Bakery is earning a name for itself thanks to its whimsical cakes

Newly opened Gold Coast bakery Yum Bakery is a business that lives up to its name.

The brainchild of Heya Yum, Yum Bakery came into being four years ago as an online business while Heya was pregnant. Since then it has slowly grown – in line with demand – into a bricks-and-mortar store in Mermaid Beach on the Queensland coast.

Heya herself designed the entire space, which includes indoor seating for six to eight people, and outdoor seating for up to 10 people, but it’s the signage – designed by her now-three-year-old daughter that has captured hearts.

“I opened the cafe as a space where customers can walk in and share those moments with us,” Heya said to Inside Gold Coast.

“And the proof is in the pudding. This year’s Valentine’s Day cakes sold out faster than you can say ‘be mine’.”

Yum Bakery’s main selling point centres around its ready-to-go vintage-inspired celebration cakes available in a range of classic flavours – think vanilla and chocolate to cookies and cream, Nutella, salted caramel, biscoff, and lemon curd and raspberry – and sizes from cupcakes right through large cakes in the bakery’s signature heart-shape. Then there are the fresh sandwiches, brownies and banana bread, all of which are made in-house, that sit alongside fresh pastries.

For those that want to be more hands-on with their cakes, Yum Bakery also runs cake decorating classes.

“I want people to leave not just with a cake, but with a smile… feeling proud of what they made,” Heya said.
