On Australia Day, all 600 Bakers Delight bakeries across the country gave away free cheese and Vegemite scrolls to say thank you to customers for their ongoing support.

Franchises gave away around 300,000 mini cheesymite scrolls, with no purchase necessary, using about 1 tonne of Vegemite, 2.25 tonnes of cheddar cheese and 15 tonnes of dough on Australia Day alone.

Bakers Delight public relations and communications manager Paul Houlihan said the giveaway was incredibly well-received by customers across the country.

“It’s a way for us to give a little something back to customers who support their local bakeries. As a business, we’re always looking for opportunities to go above and beyond for our loyal customers,” he said.

Cheesymite scrolls have been among the bakery chain’s signature products for the past three decades, with a representative for Bakers Delight saying the pairing of cheese and vegemite is quintessentially Australian.

“This pairing is as cherished as other famous Australian couples – Jason and Kylie, Kath and Kim, stubbies and thongs, snags and a barbie,” the representative said.
